Downy arrowwood is a mid-size shrub that grows in upland woodlands and forests with deciduous or mixed deciduous and coniferous trees. It grows on a variety of soils---sandy, silty or rocky---but does best on a well-drained, loam, where clumps develop a nice form. Good in shade or as an edge planting.
